Take me away to the MN State Fair: A Giveaway

Nothing makes me feel more like I’m 10 years old again than the sights, sounds, and smells — especially the smells — of the fair.

Growing up I’d work diligently all summer leading and training my dairy calf, helping to weed the vegetables, and sewing a beginner jumper to ready as 4-H exhibits for the fair.

Yes, I was an awkward child with my skinny limbs, round glasses and way too baggy t-shirt. Daisy, the calf, is pretty though. ๐Ÿ˜‰

When county fair time came in early August I was always excited to get my efforts judged and see if I might win a champion purple ribbon. The real excitement though, was whether I would win a trip to the state fair!

Here’s me at the state fair with my calf Kendra, circa 2002.

Even before I was old enough to take a trip with a 4-H project though, my family never missed the fair. It’s just how it was. Some kids went on vacation, but in my farm family we went to the state fair. Work usually didn’t allow for extended trips, but we could still take a day or two to experience the magic of the great Minnesota get-together.

Almost always we would be there the night before the fair started to see the crowing of Princess Kay of the Milky Way.

Princess Kay is a young woman who is selected each year to be the official goodwill ambassador of Minnesota’s dairy farmers. I competed for the title on the county level back in the day, and one of my sisters was even a finalist for Princess Kay and so got her head sculpted in 85 pounds of butter during the fair.

Yes, that’s my sister in the butter booth amidst the sculptures. Forgive me and my ice cream eating face.

Aside from my dairy connection, there are many wonderful things to see, do, and EAT at the fair.

All the major media outlets move their broadcasts to the fairgrounds for 12 days, and over 1 million people visit annually. So, it’s kind of a big deal around here. ๐Ÿ™‚

It’s always 12 days of fun, ending Labor Day, so we’re less than 3 weeks from the start. And… I want to help you get to the fair this year.

So now is when the giveaway part comes in. Right here on my blog, I’m giving away 4 state fair entry tickets and 4 malt coupons for the Dairy Goodness Bar. That’s $60 in goodies! Midwest Dairy Association, who sponsors the Princess Kay program, is also the sponsor behind this little giveaway.

Now I know many of you live across the country, but I’m betting I have more than a few Minnesota-area readers too.

Whether you’re near or far, if you want to win and come to the fair for free here’s what you do.

To gain one entry: simply leave a comment related to state fair. Maybe it’s a fun memory or perhaps your favorite thing to see, eat, or do at the fair?

To gain a second entry: share this giveaway via social media and leave an additional comment telling me you’ve done so. This can be on twitter, Facebook, and/or your blog, etc.

Feel free to mention @midwestdairy and @mnstatefair on twitter or look for Midwest Dairy and Princess Kay on Facebook!

The giveaway will be open through Sunday, August 11th, and I’ll announce a randomly selected winner next Monday.

As for me, I’ll definitely be at the fair on August 25th this year for the 5K Milk Run. It’s our first official Team Dairy event, so I’m pretty excited to meet some of the other runners I’ve only interacted with online. If you’ll be at the milk run — let me know! I’m sure my husband and I will make at least one other trip to the fair too. It’s a fun place full of memories and new adventures for us. I hope to see you at the fair.

  1. I haven’t been to the Minnesota State Fair in probably ten years, but the husband and I have decided we’re going this year!

My must-have foods are a porkchop on a stick, corndog, and mini doughnuts. Oh, and the 1919 Rootbeer!

  2. There are so many things that I love about the Great Minnesota Get Together, but I am really looking forward to the cheese curds because I can’t find them anywhere since I moved to the east coast.

Hubby and I have been saying we would go to the MN State Fair since we moved to MN 8 years ago but we haven’t made the journey yet. This year we have decided we shouldn’t put off trying all the great “food on a stick” we hear about every year and we are really looking forward to going.

  4. Jen says:

I went to my first MN state fair last year, it rocks!!!

  5. Eileen says:

I love watching the spaying and neutering surgeries. It also is for a great cause which is wonderful. My favorite thing to eat is the apple dumpling with ice cream. Even though it is not on a stick it’s still fabulous!

  6. Jon says:

The tractors and machinery hill is the best part about the fair. Although the DNR information is a close second.

  7. Bree says:

    I just like the food!

  8. Jill says:

I moved to MN few years ago and I am a total fair junkie. I actually talked my husband into going to this year at 6am opening day! I love the food, the people and the happy vibe that permeates the whole event. It is the highlight of my summer ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for posting this contest! I love your blog!

  9. Megan L says:

This is wonderful. I have never been to the Minnesota State Fair, but my family is planning to make this our first year!! I can’t wait to finally experience it!

  10. Jill W. says:

I love trying out the new foods at the fair. And people watching. Definitely people watching. ๐Ÿ™‚

I also tweeted about this: https://twitter.com/319stanley/status/365095972298170369 Great giveaway idea. Thanks for the chance to win tickets!

I like how exciting the fair always isโ€”the vibe is so buzzy. I love running into people I know, shelling out money I should be spending on groceries for the rides, and checking out all of the wild creations (4H garments, corn kernel art, flower arrangements, brand-spankin’ new calfs born right in front of me). It’s a fun tradition shared amongst us Minnesotans (and out-of-staters!) that I look forward to year after year.

  13. Heidi Nicole says:

Ahhh – the smells, so true.

We always did the Central WI State Fair, I’d even drive back home from college to go. It was a big deal! My mom lives right near the fair grounds now and isn’t quite as excited about it as she was when it wasn’t in her backyard all week, but hey…she does get the smells! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  14. TJS says:

    Lisa,
I love reading memories like these! Also thankful that our “girls” and their hubbies are making similar memories with their little, and not so little, ones. The ag lifestyle is unique, but rewarding.

  15. Karl says:

We love the fair! One of our favorite things is the 4H building!

  16. Jena says:

What great memories! I don’t remember ever going to the fair as a kid – Not the Florida State Fair, at least. I actually don’t think I’ve ever been. In my hometown we have a little fair called Pig on the Pond, that is a pretty big deal and was always fun to go to when we were young teens.. We also have the Strawberry Festival in Feb-March, which is a pretty big deal. I’ve been a few times in recent years; I’ve realized I’m NOT a crowd person. I hate all the people, I get anxiety, and can’t enjoy myself.

    • Lisa says:

The huge crowd days aren’t my fav either. I actually love the early mornings on weekdays when it’s cooler, less crazy, kids are busy doing morning animal chores, and you can smell the coffee and breakfast.

Your strawberry festival sounds pretty sweet!

So if you win these tix, will you be heading up to Minnesota? ๐Ÿ™‚

  17. I love all things dipped in chocolate on a stick and also the CHEESE CURDS! I endure the crowds since there is so much to do and see!!!!

  18. Pingback: Bird’s Eye View | Cow Spots and Tales

  19. The people watching is the best. My dad would take us every year and pay us our $20 for working on the farm. All. Summer. Long.

    So worth it!

  20. Heather says:

I love the Minnesota Fair!! Haven’t been for years, would love to go this year!!

  21. Michael Johnson says:

Ah the great Minnesota Get Together! My wife and I look forward to meeting you at the Milk Run!
Both my wifes family and my own never missed a fair growing up. Its a tradition we look forward to passing on to our son. This will be his second fair and he’ll only be 13 months on August 30th!
